The Minister of Defence of Nigeria, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has called for stronger collaboration among African air forces and greater investment in advanced aerospace technologies to confront the continent’s growing security challenges.
Speaking at the opening of the 4th African Air Forces Forum in Lagos, which convened Chiefs of Air Staff and aerospace leaders from over 30 nations, the minister emphasized the importance of unity, innovation, and strategic partnerships in responding to evolving regional and global threats.
“We are confronted by multidimensional threats that transcend borders and defy traditional responses. Terrorism, transnational crime, and maritime insecurity demand robust, collective action anchored in advanced airpower and strategic partnerships,” he said.
Themed “Strengthening Collaboration in Advanced Aerospace Technologies for Enhanced National and Regional Security,” the forum is seen as a critical step toward deeper defence cooperation on the continent.
Highlighting Nigeria’s commitment, the minister noted that under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the country is making significant investments in modernizing the Nigerian Air Force. Priority areas include Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), air mobility, and precision strike capabilities.
“A technologically advanced Nigerian Air Force is not only vital to Nigeria’s security but a strategic asset to Africa’s collective defence,” he stated.
He further underscored the importance of integrating cutting-edge technologies—such as unmanned aerial systems and cyber defence—into Africa’s defence strategies. However, he cautioned that technology alone is insufficient.
“This forum is not only about technological advancement. It is about the human dimension of trust, mutual respect, and a shared ambition for a secure, united and prosperous Africa,” he added.
The minister also praised President Tinubu for his steadfast support of the Nigerian Armed Forces and his regional leadership in promoting peace and security.
In conclusion, he commended the Chief of Air Staff and the Nigerian Air Force for organizing the high-level forum, describing it as a demonstration of what can be achieved when “purpose meets partnership.”
The forum is expected to generate actionable strategies and strengthen inter-African cooperation, using air power as a tool to promote peace, stability, and sustainable development across the continent.
