Hajiya Rahama, mother of the Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas’ wife, has passed away after a brief illness. She died at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in Shika, Zaria, on Friday and was buried the same day at the Tukur-Tukur cemetery after Jumma’at prayers.
The sad announcement was made in a statement signed by Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, younger brother of the deceased and a director at the Northern Elders Forum (NEF). Hajiya Rahama was also the mother of Hajiya Hussaina, the Speaker’s first wife.
Her funeral was attended by dignitaries including Speaker Abbas, the Chief Whip of the House, Hon. Usman Bello Kumo, Minority Whip, Hon. Ali Isa, district heads from the Zazzau Emirate, and several religious leaders.
In an emotional tribute, Speaker Abbas described the late Hajiya Rahama, also known as Hajiya Rahmatu Bello Mukaddas, as “a woman of exceptional virtue” and “a symbol of unity and motherhood.”
“She lived a virtuous life worthy of emulation,” he said. “Not only was she a peacemaker, but she also stood as a beacon of selflessness, tolerance, and love.”
Remembered for her deep commitment to family and community, Hajiya Rahama was praised for her compassion and the positive impact she had on the lives of many. Her death has been described as a significant loss not just to her family but to the wider community.
The family has called on the public to remember her in prayers and to uphold the values she embodied—kindness, unity, and generosity.
