Security around the Lagos State House of Assembly in Alausa, Ikeja, was heightened on Monday ahead of a scheduled plenary session, following recent leadership changes within the House.
A notice issued on Sunday by the acting Clerk’s office advised staff members and legislative aides to bring valid identification to access the premises. The notice, signed by Omotayo Adekemi on behalf of the acting Clerk, read:
“Regarding management directives, all staff members and legislative aides must present valid identity cards to access the House premises. Please remember that entry will be denied to anyone without a valid identity card.”
The tightened security measures come in the wake of the removal of former Speaker Hon. Mudashiru Obasa by over two-thirds of the lawmakers on January 13, 2025, citing allegations of high-handedness, lateness to the plenary, and abuse of office. Obasa was replaced by his deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda.
Obasa, who returned to Lagos on Saturday, is expected at Monday’s plenary. During a reception held in his honour over the weekend, he maintained that he remains the Speaker, claiming that his removal did not follow due process.
In response to Obasa’s remarks, the House stated Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, reiterating that his removal stands, as it was backed by over two-thirds of the lawmakers. The statement pledged continued support and loyalty to Speaker Mojisola Meranda.
“The claims made by the former Speaker are unfounded. Nothing has changed; the House remains united under Speaker Meranda’s leadership,” the statement read.
The lawmakers also cautioned Obasa against making inflammatory statements, describing his post-impeachment remarks as “uncalled for” and “unparliamentary.”
Monday’s plenary session is expected to address ongoing legislative matters amid the unfolding leadership dispute.
