Youth and community groups in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State have partnered with the local government administration to develop solutions to the lingering insecurity confronting communities in the area.
The collaboration was initiated during a consultative meeting between the leadership of the Joint Youth and Community Groups of Shiroro LGA, operating under the Coalition of Shiroro Associations (COSA), and the Chairman of Shiroro Local Government Area, Isyaku Bawa Kuta, held on May 12, 2026, at the council secretariat.
According to a statement signed by the Secretary of the Joint Youth and Community Groups of Shiroro LGA, Mu’azu Isah, the meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between community stakeholders and the local government in addressing the protracted security crisis affecting the area.
The groups identified key areas requiring urgent attention, including improving the operational relationship between community associations and the local government administration, promoting unity among youth and community organisations, and creating a coordinated grassroots framework for tackling insecurity.
As part of the engagement, COSA submitted a policy proposal to the council outlining strategic interventions aimed at addressing the root causes and impact of insecurity in Shiroro. The proposal recommended the establishment of community-based early warning and response systems, strengthening of local intelligence networks, youth engagement and empowerment programmes, and rehabilitation support for affected communities.
The statement noted that Shiroro communities had endured more than a decade of insecurity marked by killings, destruction of property, disruption of farming activities, ransom payments, bomb attacks, and repeated assaults on rural settlements.
Responding, the Chairman, Isyaku Bawa Kuta, commended the initiative and acknowledged the importance of organised youth and community groups in supporting government efforts to restore peace and stability in the area.
He assured the delegation that the local government would review the proposal and consider integrating its recommendations into the council’s security and development plans.
Both parties agreed to sustain engagement, strengthen information sharing, and coordinate joint initiatives aimed at restoring peace, safeguarding lives and property, and promoting socio-economic recovery across Shiroro Local Government Area.
The coalition also reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the local government, traditional institutions, and security agencies to advance peacebuilding and strengthen community resilience in the area.
