The Sokoto State Water Board has completed emergency repairs on a major water pipeline that burst earlier this week, flooding part of the city and disrupting water supply.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the General Manager of the Board, Engr. Aminu Haruna Mika’ilu, said the incident occurred when a high-pressure surge from the main pumping station caused the pipeline to rupture, turning the affected area into what appeared to be a river.

According to the statement, water was gushing several metres into the air from the damaged section of the pipeline.

“We give thanks to Allah for granting us the ability to complete this work on the evening of Friday, 22/05/2026,” the statement read.

It added that repair work continued day and night, with 15 pumping machines deployed to drain the flooded area before engineers could gain access to the damaged pipeline and carry out repairs.

The statement further noted that the swift resolution of the problem was made possible through the coordinated efforts of the Water Board and the Sokoto State Government.

Engr. Mika’ilu commended the technical team for their dedication, resilience, and professionalism in handling the emergency.

The statement also expressed appreciation to Governor Ahmed Aliyu for his prompt intervention.
“He did not hesitate after being notified of the incident and immediately approved all the resources needed for the response,” the statement said.

“We pray to Allah to reward him abundantly. Ameen.”
With the repairs now completed, the Board said normal water supply would gradually resume and apologized to residents for the inconvenience caused by the disruption.

It also assured the public that further updates would be provided as the system stabilizes.

The pipeline burst is one of several infrastructure challenges the state has faced this year as the government continues efforts to expand, rehabilitate, and maintain water supply facilities across the state capital and surrounding local government areas.
