Tinubu committed to ending insecurity in Southeast – Defence Minister

The Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar, has reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to eradicating all forms of insecurity in Nigeria’s South-East region and Cross River State.

Speaking on Thursday in Enugu during a meeting with heads of security agencies and key stakeholders, Abubakar highlighted the administration’s progress in tackling insecurity nationwide, particularly in the South-East.

“President Tinubu has achieved significant strides in combating insecurity over the past year and is determined to do even more,” the minister said.

He emphasized Tinubu’s directive to engage stakeholders in finding lasting solutions, noting that peace and security are essential for development and economic prosperity.

“The South-East is home to industrious businessmen and women who require a secure environment for their enterprises to thrive,” Abubakar added.

The minister called for candid suggestions and actionable information from stakeholders to strengthen security efforts.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division, Maj.-Gen. Hassan Dada, outlined the Army’s plans for ensuring a secure festive season. He noted that the Joint Security Task Force, Operation UDO KA, has bolstered efforts to provide a safe environment for the traditional Christmas returnees.

“We have put in place a robust strategy to improve security and ensure a seamless yuletide,” Dada assured.

Retired Maj.-Gen. John Nwoga highlighted the role of misleading social media content in heightening insecurity fears.

“Old videos of criminal activities are frequently recirculated to instill panic. It is crucial for the people of the South-East to address this issue collectively and counter fake news,” he said.

During his visit, the Defence Minister held discussions with various groups, including women and youth organizations, traditional rulers, and religious leaders, underlining the government’s inclusive approach to addressing security challenges.

The meeting reflects the administration’s resolve to foster peace and create an enabling environment for development in the region.
