The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called on residents of Kano to remain calm and avoid any actions that could disrupt the peace of the ancient city.
The Emir made this appeal on Friday evening in response to the Court of Appeal’s judgment on the validity of his appointment as the 16th Emir of Kano.
A three-member panel of Justices from the appellate court, sitting in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), overturned an earlier ruling by the Federal High Court, Kano Division, which had nullified his reinstatement. The Federal High Court decision, delivered by Justice Abdullahi Liman in a fundamental rights application filed by Aminu Babba Dan’Agundi, had ruled in favour of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, against Sanusi.
Reacting to the ruling, Sanusi described the decision as a testament to God’s will.
“As you all know, the Appeal Court has confirmed today that the State High Court has no jurisdiction over emirate issues,” he said. “This judgment was expected, and those who initiated the case in court knew this all along. Even the judge who issued the initial order was aware of the limits of his jurisdiction. Those who influenced him to make that decision also knew the truth. However, for the past eight months, they have aimed to promote selfish interests and instigate unrest in this part of the country.”
The Emir commended the people of Kano for their peaceful conduct despite the controversy.
“Despite their efforts, our greatest achievement is that the state has remained peaceful. There has been no violence or disorder. We call on everyone to continue maintaining peace and unity,” he said.
Sanusi urged residents to trust in divine judgment, emphasizing that the situation was in God’s hands.
“This battle is not ours but God’s. And God does not need anyone’s help. Let us keep praying for His guidance and intervention. May God protect us, and whoever seeks to ignite chaos in Kano, may that fire consume them instead.”
He also stressed the importance of rejecting any provocation that could lead to unrest.
“To those who wish harm upon Kano or its peace, may they face the consequences of their own wishes. They may attempt to provoke violence, but let us not respond to their actions. Let us not engage them in any way. Whoever questions God’s judgment will ultimately face the consequences of doing so,” he added.
The Emir concluded by urging all Kano residents to prioritize peaceful coexistence and unity in the state.
