The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has announced plans to convene a National Security Summit aimed at strengthening collaboration between the media and security agencies in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the event, the President of the NUJ, , said the summit, themed “Media and Security Agencies as Partners in Nation Building,” was conceived in recognition of the critical roles both institutions play in promoting national stability, peace, and development.
Yahya noted that national security is a collective responsibility that requires the commitment and cooperation of all stakeholders, stressing that both the media and security agencies occupy strategic positions in shaping public discourse and fostering national cohesion.
According to him, the summit will bring together journalists, security experts, government officials, and other stakeholders to examine emerging security threats and identify practical ways to improve cooperation between the media and security institutions.
He explained that discussions at the summit would focus on responsible security reporting, combating misinformation and disinformation, balancing national security concerns with press freedom, improving access to credible information, and enhancing collaboration between journalists and security agencies.
The NUJ president emphasized that the media, as the watchdog of society, has a constitutional duty to inform, educate, and hold public institutions accountable, while security agencies remain indispensable in protecting lives, preserving peace, and safeguarding the country’s sovereignty.
“The relationship between the media and security agencies must be built on mutual respect, professionalism, trust, and a shared commitment to the common good,” he said.
Yahya further stated that the summit is not intended to compromise the independence of the media or interfere with the operational responsibilities of security agencies. Rather, he said, it is designed to deepen understanding, encourage dialogue, and establish a framework for cooperation that benefits Nigerians.
He expressed appreciation to security institutions, government agencies, development partners, and members of the media community for supporting the initiative.
Calling on stakeholders to participate actively, Yahya urged participants to approach the summit with an open mind and a common vision of a peaceful, secure, and prosperous Nigeria.
He also appealed to media organizations and journalists across the country to support the initiative by creating awareness and ensuring that the objectives of the summit receive widespread public attention.
The NUJ president reaffirmed the union’s commitment to promoting journalism that strengthens democracy, advances national unity, and contributes meaningfully to nation-building.
