The #ReformINEC and #SackYakubu Movement on Wednesday, announced a nationwide protest to demand electoral reform and the resignation of Professor Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The two-day protest, according to the spokesperson of the Movement, Julius Mathew, will commence in Abuja on December 5th, 2024, and will subsequently spread to other major cities across Nigeria.

This movement is a direct response to widespread concerns regarding the integrity and fairness of recent elections.  Allegations of electoral malpractice, lack of transparency, and insufficient voter education have fueled public dissatisfaction and eroded trust in INEC’s ability to conduct free, fair, and credible elections.

The call for Professor Yakubu’s resignation is not a personal attack but a reflection of the deep-seated concerns regarding the leadership and effectiveness of the commission under his tenure.

“For too long, Nigerians have endured flawed electoral processes that undermine our democracy,” stated [Name and Title of Movement Spokesperson].  “The upcoming elections are crucial, and we cannot afford another cycle of irregularities.  The ReformINEC and SackYakubu movement demands a fundamental overhaul of INEC’s operations to ensure transparency, accountability, and the fair representation of the people’s will.”

The movement emphasizes that the planned protests will be conducted peacefully and lawfully.  Organizers have urged participants to maintain decorum and respect the rights of all citizens.  The protests aim to amplify the voices of concerned Nigerians and to compel the government and INEC to address the critical issues plaguing the electoral system.

The movement’s demands extend beyond the removal of Professor Yakubu.  We advocate for comprehensive electoral reform, including:

–   Increased transparency in the electoral process.

*   Improved voter education and registration.

*   Strengthening the mechanisms for resolving electoral disputes.

*   Independent oversight of INEC’s operations.

*   Strengthened sanctions against electoral malpractice.

Social media has played a vital role in mobilizing support for the movement.  The hashtags ReformINEC and SackYakubu have gained significant traction, demonstrating the widespread nature of public discontent.  The movement encourages all Nigerians who share these concerns to participate in the peaceful protests and to continue amplifying their voices through social media and other channels.

The ReformINEC and SackYakubu movement believes that a free and fair electoral process is the bedrock of a functioning democracy.  We are committed to working towards a future where every Nigerian’s vote is respected and where the electoral system accurately reflects the will of the people. We urge the government to engage with the concerns of the movement and take decisive steps towards electoral reform.  The future of Nigerian democracy depends on it.
