The Nigerian Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC) has appointed former Director General of the National Lottery Commission and renowned television producer, Olorogun Peter Igho, as the National Coordinator of the NSCC Goodwill Ambassadors. The appointment was announced on Thursday night at a media and entertainment roundtable in Abuja by the Director General of the NSCC, Dr. Emem Omokaro.
The event, which gathered prominent media veterans over the age of 60, was organized to inaugurate the NSCC Goodwill Ambassadors committee. The ambassadors are tasked with advocating for the rights and welfare of senior citizens across Nigeria, a statement by a member of the gorup, Dr Danladi Bako on Sunday said.
In her address, Dr. Omokaro outlined the mission of the Senior Citizens Centre, emphasizing the role of the Goodwill Ambassadors, led by Peter Igho, in advancing the centre’s cause. She called on them to champion the rights of senior citizens, promote social justice, and foster a healthy and supportive environment for the elderly as they age gracefully.
Dr. Omokaro also highlighted the alignment of this initiative with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, urging the ambassadors to leverage their public influence to increase awareness and acceptance of the NSCC’s mission nationwide.
The following day, an investiture ceremony took place, where Olorogun Peter Igho and other distinguished ambassadors, such as actor Chika Okpala (popularly known as Zebrudaya from NTA’s Masquerade), former Director General of the National Orientation Agency Alhaji Idi Farouk, and renowned actress Joke Silva, were honoured. The investiture was presided over by Dr Salma Anas, Special Adviser to the President on Health, with notable senior citizens, including Wakilin Adamawa, Alhaji Hassan Adamu, and retired Permanent Secretary Dr Agari, in attendance.
The Goodwill Ambassadors, carefully selected from across Nigeria, include retired journalists such as Cyril Stober, producers like Bello Abubakar, directors like Austin Eruka, and media moguls like Tijjani Ramalan. The ambassadors lauded Dr. Omokaro for her dedication and dynamic leadership, pledging their full support to mobilize public awareness and advocate for the NSCC’s mission. Their collective aim is to ensure that ageing in Nigeria becomes a source of joy and fulfilment for senior citizens.
