Renowned automotive designer and visionary leader, Jelani Aliyu, has urged Nigerian youths to embrace patriotism, advanced technologies, and innovation in order to build a prosperous and globally competitive Nigeria. Aliyu made the charge during his keynote address at the third matriculation and orientation ceremony of North West University, Sokoto.

Aliyu, who is the Barden Sokoto and founder of Jelani Aliyu Consulting in Qatar as well as The Mashrabiya Group in Nigeria, congratulated the university’s founder and Pro-Chancellor, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, for the establishment of the institution, describing it as an “outstanding feat.” He also praised the Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhktar Umar Bunza, for his leadership.

Using the migratory bird “swift” as a metaphor for resilience and global experience, Aliyu highlighted Africa’s historic glory and rich heritage.

“The swift knows the beauty and magnificence that is Africa… territories whose blessings have shaped and moulded our unique histories and heritage, giving us kingdoms, empires and caliphates that prospered to amazing heights,” he said.

He lamented the continent’s inability to match the developmental pace of Europe and the Americas despite abundant resources but maintained that Nigeria’s challenges are not permanent.

“We have tripped, but we haven’t fallen,” he noted, calling for a national intellectual shift to achieve peace, progress, and prosperity.

Addressing the students directly, Aliyu described them as Nigeria’s superheroes, emphasizing that this is their century to lead. He outlined six “superhero characteristics” for the youth to adopt:

  1. Love for country and pride in heritage.
  2. Understanding the essence of education as a tool for self-discovery and talent building.
  3. Relevance through societal impact and problem-solving.
  4. Focused commitment to replicating global success locally.
  5. Embracing and developing advanced technologies for collective prosperity.
  6. Pursuit of knowledge beyond the classroom to drive advanced national progress.

“The future is now,” Aliyu declared. “We shall regain our balance… and stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in the world.”

The powerful address was met with resounding applause from students, faculty, and dignitaries in attendance, inspiring renewed hope for Nigeria’s technological and developmental renaissance.
