The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has disclosed that the Nigerian government will partner with the National Council for Civil Society of Nigeria to combat insecurity in the country.

He also commended the Councilfor their non-participation in the ongoing protests and commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his numerous initiatives aimed at revitalizing the Nigerian economy for the benefit of all citizens.

During a meeting with a delegation from the National Council, led by Comrade Johnny Emmanuel, at his office in Ship House yesterday, the Minister emphasized the importance of collaborating with civil society organizations to address insecurity.

He underscored their valuable connections to local communities, which facilitate intelligence gathering, mediation, and humanitarian assistance in conflict-affected areas.

Minister Badaru assured the delegation that President Tinubu is committed to economic improvement through robust policies, which have already shown positive results.

He highlighted the economic growth in Q1 2024, noting it as the second-fastest first-quarter growth in the past six years, and emphasized the Defence strategy’s success in enhancing security.

The Minister detailed several key initiatives, including:

  • The Nigerian Student Loan Scheme to improve access to higher education
  • The Livestock Ministry to address conflicts between herders and farmers
  • The Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund (RHIDF) to boost infrastructure funding
  • The sale of crude oil to indigenous refining companies in Naira
  • The signing of the National Minimum Wage Act into law
  • Autonomy granted to Local Governments for effective accountability and development
  • Investments in irrigation (dams and channels)
  • Zero tariffs and duties on imports of raw materials and active pharmaceutical ingredients
  • Distribution of grains to states
  • Other social security interventions

“I urge Nigerians to remain patient as the President continues to introduce more innovations to improve the economy. Although he has been in office for just a year, his efforts have already made significant strides, and we anticipate seeing further positive results soon,” the Minister assured.

Earlier, Comrade Johnny Emmanuel, the National President of the National Council of Civil Society of Nigeria, praised the Minister for his exceptional performance and commitment to service.

He noted that the Minister’s track record of achievements, dating back to his tenure as Governor, earned him the nickname “Calculator” due to his meticulous management of resources.

The event concluded with the presentation of an award to the Minister, recognizing his outstanding commitment, patriotism, and integrity in service.
