Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has urged Nigerians to renew their commitment to ending banditry and other forms of insecurity as the nation marks its 65th independence anniversary.
In a statement by his spokesperson, Abubakar Bawa, Aliyu described insecurity as a major obstacle to Nigeria’s socio-economic and political development, stressing the need for governments, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and communities to work together.
He warned against the “informant syndrome” in rural communities, which he said fuels abductions across Sokoto State.
The Governor outlined steps taken by his administration to curb insecurity, including the procurement of over 180 patrol vehicles, establishment of the Sokoto Community Guard Corps with 40 Hilux vans and 700 motorcycles, the operationalization of an Air Force base, and an upward review of allowances for security personnel. He also cited the upgrade of DSS tracking devices to 5G and the construction of a new military base in Illela.
Aliyu further called on Nigerians to emulate the patriotism and unity of the country’s founding fathers, paying tribute to leaders such as Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Ahmadu Bello, and Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.
He wished all Nigerians a happy Independence Day.
