The Kano State Government, in collaboration with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), is set to establish four bilingual schools offering education in both English and Arabic. This initiative aims to integrate Almajiri children into the formal education system and address the growing challenge of out-of-school children in the state.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announced the partnership on Monday while distributing 789,000 school uniforms to pupils in over 7,000 public schools across Kano’s 44 local government areas.
Speaking at the event held at the Government House, Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to making education a top priority. He emphasized the importance of the bilingual schools, stating they will provide Almajiri children with access to formal education, helping to reduce the number of children on the streets.
As part of the government’s ongoing efforts to revitalize the education sector, Governor Yusuf highlighted achievements under the state’s emergency education plan. These include constructing 336 new classrooms, renovating 119 old ones, and supplying over 53,000 three-seater desks and chairs, benefiting more than 160,000 pupils.
The governor also shared other significant milestones, such as the distribution of 1.3 million textbooks and a conditional cash transfer program that has supported 45,000 girls with N20,000 each to encourage their education.
Governor Yusuf expressed his gratitude to the people of Kano for their unwavering support and reassured them of his administration’s dedication to delivering transformative educational initiatives.
This collaboration with IDB is seen as a major step toward ensuring inclusive and equitable education, setting a strong foundation for addressing the educational challenges faced by northern Nigeria.
