The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has commended renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, for mobilizing a legal team to take action against the former military head of state, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB), following his recent admission that Chief MKO Abiola won the June 12, 1993, presidential election. The group also reiterated its support for the posthumous declaration of Abiola as Nigeria’s rightful president.

In a statement issued on Thursday, February 27, 2025, MURIC’s Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, praised Falana’s initiative, urging progressive lawyers and human rights activists to rally behind the legal pursuit of justice.

MURIC described the annulment of the election as a “coup against the General Will” and a “criminal abortion” of democracy, emphasizing that justice remains relevant, regardless of time.

The organization also called on the Nigerian government to formally declare the official results of the June 12 election, as recently disclosed by IBB, to cement Abiola’s place in history and allow his family to enjoy the privileges due to a democratically elected president.
