A former Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Bashir Rabe Mani, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a six-month extension of tenure for the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
Mani, the Publisher of GlobalNewsGuru, in a statement on Saturday in Sokoto, described the extension as “a strategic decision that preserves institutional continuity while Nigeria’s Customs leadership continues to shine internationally.”
“President Tinubu has shown vision by retaining CGC Adeniyi for another six months.
“Under his watch, the Nigeria Customs Service has achieved record revenue collection, accelerated trade facilitation, and deepened the use of technology through the B’Odogwu portal,” Mani said.
He said the extension is particularly significant given Adeniyi’s current role as the incumbent Chairman of the World Customs Organization (WCO).
“While reforming Customs at home, CGC Adeniyi is also projecting Nigeria positively at the global level as WCO Chairman.
“His performance there has enhanced Nigeria’s voice in shaping international customs policies on security, trade facilitation, and digital transformation,” the Dan Masanin Mani added.
Mani noted that Adeniyi’s leadership at the WCO has opened doors for technical cooperation and partnerships that directly benefit Nigerian ports and border operations.
He added that the six-month extension will enable the CGC to consolidate domestic reforms while fulfilling Nigeria’s responsibilities at the WCO.
“Reforms need time to mature. With this extension, the Service can complete ongoing modernization projects, strengthen anti-smuggling operations, and sustain the confidence reposed in it by stakeholders and international partners,” he said.
Mani urged Customs officers to rededicate themselves to professionalism and transparency during the extension period, stressing that the President’s decision places greater responsibility on the Service to deliver results.
President Tinubu on Friday approved the six-month tenure extension for CGC Adeniyi to ensure the completion of key aspects of the Service’s modernization and revenue optimization agenda.
