Sokoto, Nigeria – The newly elected Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council, Usman Mohammed Binji, has pledged to prioritize the welfare and development of journalists in the state.

In his inaugural speech, delivered at a ceremony attended by union members and dignitaries on Saturday, Binji expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and committed to fostering professionalism and unity within the council.

“I am humbled and grateful for the trust you have placed in me. Your vote is not just a mandate but a call to service, and I pledge to work tirelessly to promote the interests of our great union,” Binji said.

Binji calls for unity

Acknowledging his fellow contestant in the election, Binji commended his passion and commitment to the union, expressing hope for collaboration to achieve shared goals. He emphasized the importance of unity, professionalism, and advocacy, which he described as the bedrock of the NUJ.

“Our union is built on the principles of solidarity, professionalism, and advocacy. As your chairman, I pledge to uphold these principles and work towards a more vibrant, inclusive, and effective union,” he added.

Key priorities

In his speech, Binji outlined his administration’s priorities, including:

  • Enhancing the welfare of journalists.
  • Creating training and capacity-building opportunities.
  • Advocating for improved working conditions.
  • Promoting excellence and professionalism in journalism.

He urged members to remain focused on addressing challenges facing the union, the profession, and society at large.

Partnership with Sokoto state government

Binji expressed his administration’s support for the Sokoto State Government under the leadership of Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, pledging to collaborate on initiatives aimed at ensuring good governance and state development.

“I am deeply grateful to the Sokoto State Government for their unwavering support and sacrifice toward our shared goals. Their commitment to creating a conducive environment for progress is truly commendable,” he noted.

Gratitude and call for support

The chairman thanked his campaign team and other stakeholders for their dedication and support during the election process. He called on members to pray for wisdom and strength as he begins his tenure, vowing to lead with integrity, humility, and dedication.

“Let us continue to work together, fueled by our collective passion and commitment to a brighter future,” Binji concluded.

The ceremony ended with resounding applause, reflecting the optimism and enthusiasm among NUJ members for the new administration’s vision for the council’s future.
