What AGILE launch means for Sokoto state

On Monday, at the Sokoto State Government House, Governor Dr. Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto officially launched the Adolescent Girls’ Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE). As part of the launch, the governor ceremonially disbursed school improvement grants to 240 secondary schools across the state.

This marks a significant step toward improving educational access and infrastructure, especially for adolescent girls.

The breakdown of disbursement

A total of 240 secondary schools received funding based on their student population:

  • 98 schools with 002 to 200 students received ₦23,000,000 each.
  • 142 schools with 201 to 500 students received ₦46,000,000 each.

By the end of the first quarter of 2025, another 248 secondary schools will benefit, with interventions allocated as follows:

  • Schools with 501 to 1,000 students: ₦92,000,000
  • Schools with 1,001 to 1,500 students: ₦138,000,000
  • Schools with 1,501 and above students: ₦231,000,000

These funds are intended for the renovation of classrooms, construction of toilets and boreholes, and provision of desks, ensuring that schools are equipped to provide a safe and conducive learning environment.

Immediate impact

As of 3 PM today, schools began receiving the funds directly into their accounts, fulfilling the governor’s directive for immediate disbursement following the launch. This prompt action reflects the administration’s commitment to ensuring that resources reach the intended beneficiaries without delay.

Transforming education for adolescent girls

The AGILE project focuses on enhancing educational opportunities for adolescent girls by:

  1. Creating safe learning environments: Renovated classrooms and improved sanitation facilities aim to foster an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for girls.
  2. Expanding access: The project includes constructing additional classrooms to increase enrollment capacity and ensure seamless transitions from primary to junior secondary and higher education levels.
  3. Empowering girls: Life skills, digital literacy, and financial incentives will equip adolescent girls with the tools needed for adulthood and financial independence.
  4. Strengthening systems: By addressing gaps in educational management, the AGILE project aims to enhance the overall functionality of the state’s education sector.

A boost for educational infrastructure

The disbursement of school improvement grants highlights Sokoto State’s dedication to upgrading educational facilities and promoting quality education. These funds will support the renovation and rehabilitation of ageing infrastructure, making schools more conducive to teaching and learning.

Stakeholders welcome the initiative

The launch ceremony was attended by key stakeholders in the education sector, community leaders, and representatives of participating schools. They expressed optimism about the transformative potential of the AGILE project.

The initiative underscores Sokoto State’s commitment to empowering its adolescent girls and improving the educational landscape for future generations. Through AGILE, the state is not only addressing current challenges but also laying a solid foundation for sustainable development and progress.
