You can’t determine my political journey, Jonathan replies Keyamo, Odinkalu

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed claims that his political future is closed, insisting that nobody has the power to dictate his choices ahead of the 2027 elections.

Jonathan was reacting to recent remarks by Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo (SAN) and rights activist Chidi Odinkalu, both of whom argued that he was constitutionally barred from contesting again.

Keyamo’s claim

Keyamo had insisted that Jonathan’s tenure was over, saying:
“The law is clear. Jonathan has exhausted his chances of seeking another mandate. Any speculation about his return in 2027 is dead on arrival.”

Odinkalu’s argument

On his part, Odinkalu described the idea of Jonathan returning as a “constitutional aberration”, warning that it would only invite needless legal battles for the country.

But Jonathan fires back

But Jonathan’s camp hit back strongly, rejecting their positions.
“Neither Festus Keyamo nor Chidi Odinkalu has the authority to determine Dr. Goodluck Jonathan’s political journey,” a close ally said.
“The decision to run or not in 2027 is entirely his, guided by the constitution and the will of Nigerians. Nobody can arrogate to themselves the power to speak for him.”

The bigger picture

Jonathan has been at the center of 2027 speculations, with reports that some northern power blocs are pushing him as a possible consensus candidate for a single term. Within the PDP, his rumored comeback has stirred excitement and division, especially after Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed stepped aside from the race.

For now, Jonathan has neither confirmed nor denied his plans. But his latest response makes one thing clear: he won’t let critics decide his political fate.
