The National Universities Commission (NUC), has granted the Northwest University Sokoto (NWUS), a full operational license. The decision was conveyed through a letter dated August 14, 2025, signed BY the Acting Director of Inspection and Monitoring at NUC, Mrs. Lydia Imoroa, on behalf of the Executive Secretary, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu .

The formal letter, with reference NUC/ES/138/VOL/66.10, was addressed to the Vice Chancellor of Northwest University Sokoto. It recalled an assessment visit conducted from April 24 to April 27, 2025, during which NUC evaluated the institution’s compliance with operational guidelines throughout its three-year probationary period under the provisional licence .

The approval for 6 issuance of the university’s full operational licence by the NUC followed a thorough review by its management committee — a validation of its readiness and commitment to delivering quality tertiary education in alignment with national standards .

What this means

Enhanced status: With the full licence in hand, Northwest University Sokoto can now fully operate without restrictions, offering a wider range of academic programmes and enrolling students with greater confidence.

Quality assurance: The rigorous NUC inspection and subsequent approval affirm that the university has met all required benchmarks — from infrastructure to governance — ensuring a solid foundation for sustainable academic growth.

Regional impact: Located in Sokoto State, this development is expected to bolster educational access and foster socio-economic development in the region.

What to expect next

Expanded offerings: The university may now introduce new faculties, departments, and degree programmes, further enriching academic diversity.

Student influx: Prospective students can look forward to enrolling at a fully accredited institution, confident in the recognition and quality of their qualifications.

Increased investment: Authorities and institutional leaders are likely to seize this opportunity to attract more support—both governmental and private—for infrastructure, research, and academic excellence.

This development, for the Northwest University Sokoto, marks a turning point in the institution’s evolution from its probationary beginnings to a fully sanctioned institution poised to make a meaningful impact on Nigeria’s higher education landscape.
