Fresh students of Northwest University Sokoto (NWUS) have been urged to uphold integrity, discipline and perseverance as they begin their academic journey, with a reminder that university education goes beyond earning a degree to shaping character and societal contribution.

The charge was given by Prof. Lawal Suleiman Bilbis, who chaired the institution’s 4th matriculation ceremony for the 2025/2026 academic session held on April 6, 2026.

Describing matriculation as more than a routine ceremony, Bilbis said it represents a “solemn covenant” between the university and its new students, marking the beginning of an intellectual journey that will define their future and role in society.

He congratulated the matriculating students for earning admission through hard work and determination, noting that they are joining an institution positioned as a beacon of hope for the North-West region and Nigeria as a whole.

“A university is a sanctuary of ideas where curiosity is nurtured, questions are encouraged, and the pursuit of truth is paramount,” he said, urging the students to embrace core values such as integrity, humility, diligence and respect for others.

Bilbis emphasized that success in the university would not depend solely on brilliance but on consistency, discipline and the courage to persevere through challenges.

He also commended the university management for its commitment to expanding access to quality education, urging sustained investment in research, innovation, digital infrastructure and strategic partnerships to position the institution as a centre of excellence in a rapidly evolving, knowledge-driven global economy.

The chairman further acknowledged the role of parents and guardians, praising their sacrifices and continued support in helping the students reach the milestone.

Addressing the students directly, Bilbis urged them to make the most of their time in the university by cultivating good habits, making responsible choices and pursuing knowledge with passion.

“Education is not only about earning a degree—it is about becoming a responsible citizen, a problem-solver, and a contributor to the progress of your community and your nation,” he said.

He encouraged the students to take their matriculation oath with pride and a clear sense of purpose, expressing optimism that their years in the university would be marked by growth, discovery and achievement.
