Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has reiterated his administration’s commitment to worker welfare, highlighting a series of landmark achievements aimed at improving the lives and productivity of civil servants across the state.
Speaking during the 2025 International Workers’ Day celebration, Governor Aliyu praised the dedication and contributions of workers in the state, describing them as the backbone of governance and development.
“Since we came on board, we have taken bold and deliberate steps to reinvigorate the civil service,” the governor said. “It is the engine room of any government, and no administration can succeed without its workforce’s active support and cooperation.”
Governor Aliyu noted that salaries are now paid promptly, between the 19th and 20th of every month, a sharp contrast to the delays experienced under the previous administration. He said Sokoto State was the first in the country to fully implement the new N70,000 minimum wage for all civil servants, including local government workers and primary school teachers.
He further stated that his administration has paid N30,000 Goron Sallah bonuses to all workers to ease economic pressures during festive seasons, commenced the gradual clearance of a N15 billion backlog of gratuities owed since 2016, with N800 million released monthly for both old and recent retirees, restored monthly cash allocations scrapped by the past administration, organized regular training and capacity building programs for staff, addressed the issue of stagnated promotions by placing affected officers on the appropriate grade levels, initiated the construction of 1,500 low-cost houses for workers whose previous housing schemes were sold off, and launched “Shagon Sauki na Ahmadun Alu,” a program designed to provide essential goods to civil servants at subsidized prices.
“These are not mere policies but a demonstration of our solemn commitment to building a productive and motivated workforce,” Aliyu said.
He called on workers to reciprocate the government’s efforts by embracing punctuality, dedication, discipline, and transparency. He urged them to support his administration’s 9-Point Smart Agenda, which he said is driving rapid development across the state.
“As we celebrate this Workers’ Day, I thank you for your resilience, prayers, and support,” the governor said. “Together, we will build a Sokoto that works for all.”
