Sokoto State Government has called for stringent measures to address the problem of Nigeria’s porous borders. The Deputy Governor, Idris Mohammed Gobir, made the call at the 2025 Africa Border Day event organized by the National Boundary Commission (NBC), held at the Ladi Kwali Conference Centre in Abuja.
Gobir said the current state of Nigeria’s borders has allowed the influx of criminals and illegal weapons into the country.
The Deputy Governor, who also chairs the Nigeria-Niger International Border Platform, noted that the negative trend has further worsened the security challenges being experienced, particularly in the North-West region.
He expressed optimism that with fortified borders, the rate of insecurity would be reduced to the barest minimum.
Gobir stressed the need for strict scrutiny of individuals entering the country, as is currently being implemented by neighbouring Niger Republic.
He also called on the National Boundary Commission and other relevant agencies to urgently address the issue of a village called Bachaka in Sabon Birni Local Government Area, which is still appearing on Google Maps as part of Niger Republic’s territory.
Gobir expressed disappointment that despite forwarding a complaint on the issue last year, the concerned authorities are yet to take action.
He warned that urgent measures must be taken to prevent a recurrence of the Bakassi Peninsula situation.
The event was attended by the Deputy Governors of Ogun and Bayelsa States, while those of Borno and Adamawa were represented.
