The Sokoto State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability in public financial management through a two-day capacity-building workshop for key stakeholders in the budgeting and finance sectors.
The training, held at Reiz Continental Hotel in Abuja, brought together officials from the State Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, and the Sokoto State Internal Revenue Service. It focused on the updated National Chart of Accounts (NCoA), budget performance reporting, and state financial accounting standards.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Abubakar Muhammad Zayyana, said the initiative reflects the administration’s dedication to fiscal discipline and the prudent use of public resources.
“We are institutionalizing a realistic, scientific, and all-inclusive budgetary process that reflects the aspirations of every segment of our society,” he stated, adding that Sokoto has made significant progress in aligning with the International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS).
Dr. Zayyana assured that under the leadership of Governor Ahmad Aliyu, the state would continue to strengthen its public financial management system by building the capacity of its workforce and ensuring effective service delivery across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.
He also called on participants to remain focused and committed throughout the workshop, emphasizing the importance of their roles in driving reforms.
In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Maryam Ahmad Barade, described the training as a strategic move to deepen ongoing reforms and improve governance outcomes.
“This administration is focused on reversing past inefficiencies and stimulating sustainable growth through structured policy interventions and grassroots-oriented service delivery,” she noted.
Other dignitaries at the event included the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Sani Muhammad Tambuwal, and the Deputy Clerk of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Ibrahim Dogon Daji.
The training is part of the state’s broader efforts to improve budget credibility, enhance financial reporting, and ensure equitable distribution of projects and resources.
