Northwest University, Sokoto, has matriculated 644 students into its various academic programmes for the 2024/2025 academic session. The Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mukhtar Umar Bunza, announced at the institution’s third matriculation ceremony held on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at the university’s main campus in Kalambaina.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Bunza highlighted that the newly admitted students were enrolled across key faculties and programmes, notably: 398 students in the College of Health Sciences, 143 in Computer and ICT-related fields, and 104 in the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences. Admission into the Faculty of Law is pending approval by the Council for Legal Education.
The Vice Chancellor also disclosed that the National Universities Commission (NUC) has recently approved additional programmes for the university, particularly in high-demand fields such as Software Engineering, Cyber Security, and specialized medical and paramedical sciences.
“This is a clear indication of the University’s commitment to producing the critical human capital needed to meet modern challenges in science, technology, and medicine,” he said.

Since its establishment on May 12, 2022, Northwest University has grown significantly. The institution, founded by former governor and senator, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, began with just 210 students in its first academic year, followed by 37 in the 2023/2024 session. The current figure of 644 represents a remarkable leap in enrollment, reflecting growing confidence in the university’s academic offerings and infrastructure.
Located strategically between Wamakko and the city of Sokoto, the university is fast becoming a center of excellence, with major infrastructural developments underway. These include an ultra-modern Faculty of Law complex, an expansive College of Health Sciences building at Kaduna Road, and improved student accommodations at Yauri Road and Bado Quarters.

In closing, he congratulated the matriculating students, describing them as one of the most academically driven cohorts the university has admitted so far. He urged them to take full advantage of the opportunities provided and commit themselves to excellence in both character and learning.
“We are proud to have you with us,” he said. “You are the future leaders we are grooming to confront and solve society’s most pressing challenges.”
