The Katsina state chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women journalists (NAWOJ), has condemned alleged sexual assault on female journalists at the state radio.
NAWOJ, in a statement by the chairperson, Hannatu Mohammed and Secretary, Faith Maji made available to THESTORIES on Friday, said “the trend represents a gross violation of human rights and attack on female journalists at their workplace.”
Mohammed vowed that NAWOJ will not give way for the victimization of, especially women journalists, “to continue in our society by a few individuals who have no respect for gender equality.”
“For the avoidance of any doubt, NAWO will exploit all legitimate windows to continue to frown at gender bias in the workplace as well as ensure that the perpetrators of victimization against Fauziya face the full wrath of the law.”
She added that the query given to 18 persons at the Katsina state Radio on 8th November, 2023, was also part of his usual intimidation of female journalists.
NAWOJ expressed appreciation for the state governor’s immediate intervention.
“We sincerely appreciate the effort of the state governor, Umaru Radda on immediate action in setting up a committee to investigate the matter, and we hope the committee will do their work without being bias.”
She also called on the state government to investigate other cases of sexual harassment against staff of the organisation.
“We call on the state government to investigate cases of sexual harassment in the workplace by the culprit, especially on how he has been sexually assaulting other female workers,” the statement reads.
