The Federal Government has adopted the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ogun State, as a Federal University of Education.
Founded by the Ogun State Government in 2005, TASUED is Nigeria’s first specialised university of education, named after the renowned activist and founder of Mayflower School, Dr. Tai Solarin.
The institution now becomes the first federally-owned tertiary institution in Ogun East Senatorial District. With its robust infrastructure and established academic programmes, the transition will require minimal federal investment.
President Bola Tinubu approved the adoption on Friday, commending the Ogun State Government for offering one of its best educational assets to the Federal Government.
“This decision honours Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who pioneered the revolutionary free education programme in Western Nigeria, and Dr. Tai Solarin, who dedicated his life to educating children and instilling leadership values at Mayflower School,” Tinubu said.
He also acknowledged the role of the Awujale of Ijebuland in preventing the university’s closure in 2012, just seven years after its establishment.
TASUED’s upgrade aligns with the Federal Government’s strategy to enhance teacher education and improve instructional quality across the country.
With this transition, Nigeria now boasts seven Federal Universities of Education, including Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri; Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo; Federal University of Education, Kano; Federal University of Education, Zaria; Federal University of Education, Pankshin; and Federal University of Education, Kontagora.
