AfroMedia, the Pan-African initiative focused on media and journalism, has extended its warmest congratulations to Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Idris on his recent appointment as the Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United Nations and Head of the African Mission in New York.
Anthropological researcher and founder of AfroMedia, Hassan Ghazaly, praised the appointment as a reflection of the African Union’s confidence in Ambassador Idris’s seasoned diplomatic expertise. “This appointment is a clear testament to the trust Egyptian diplomacy commands on both continental and global levels,” Ghazaly said, emphasizing that it crowns a distinguished career dedicated to multilateral diplomacy, peacebuilding, and Africa’s development priorities.
Ghazaly lauded Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigration for its historic and ongoing leadership in championing African causes on the world stage. He recalled Cairo’s pivotal role during the era of African liberation movements—when it served as a launchpad for freedom fighters to bring the voices of their colonized nations to the UN in New York. Many of those leaders later became iconic figures in the fight for independence and justice in the Global South.
Ghazaly further noted that Ambassador Idris’s appointment comes at a critical juncture, coinciding with the United Nations’ 80th anniversary. “It is a powerful reminder of Egypt’s foundational role in the UN and its enduring commitment to shaping a more equitable global order,” he said.
He also underscored the strategic importance of African representation in global institutions: “This appointment marks a significant step in empowering African talents within international bodies and enhancing cooperation between the African Union and the United Nations. Cairo continues to play a vital role in deepening these ties and advancing peace and security across the continent.”
Ambassador Idris brings to the role an impressive track record, having served as Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, as Ambassador to Ethiopia, and as Permanent Representative to the African Union. In 2024, he was appointed by the UN Secretary-General to the Independent High-Level Advisory Board of the UN Peacebuilding Fund.
