The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has ordered the deployment of additional tactical teams and assets to reinforce security operations, in a move to quell escalating violence in Benue State. The IGP described the recent killings in Benue as “senseless” and an “act of terrorism,” vowing to bring perpetrators to justice.

The IGP made the declaration during a visit to Benue State today, where he led a high-powered police delegation, including the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Operations), DIG Yakubu Kwazhi; DIG Logistics and Supply, Adebola Ayinde Hamzat; AIG Zone 4, Zachariah Fera; and CP Special Intervention Squad, Abayomi Shogunle.

During his visit to Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia at the Government House in Makurdi, the police chief condemned the recent wave of violence that claimed scores of lives, reassuring the governor and people of Benue of the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to restoring lasting peace.

Governor Alia, in response, welcomed the IGP’s visit and expressed appreciation for the federal intervention and sustained security deployments to the state, noting that the support had brought some relief to affected communities.

As part of his assessment, IGP Egbetokun visited the Yelwata Community in Guma Local Government Area—one of the worst-hit areas—where he was accompanied by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa. The IGP toured scenes of destruction, met with grieving community members, and pledged a reinforced security presence. He directed DIG Kwazhi to take charge of operations aimed at stabilizing the region.

Speaking to officers and personnel of the Benue State Police Command at the Officers’ Mess in Makurdi, the IGP emphasized the need for renewed professionalism and commitment. He assured the command of improved welfare, logistics, and operational support to enable them effectively combat emerging threats.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Nigeria Police Force reiterated its unwavering commitment to President Bola Tinubu’s national security agenda and pledged to ensure justice for victims while securing all affected communities.

“The Force remains resolute towards bringing the perpetrators of these attacks to justice and restoring peace to all affected communities,” the statement read.

Benue State has long grappled with violent attacks often linked to land disputes, banditry, and herder-farmer conflicts, with communities repeatedly calling for more robust federal intervention. Today’s development signals a renewed urgency in tackling the crisis head-on.
