The new Vice Chancellor of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS), Prof. Bashir Garba has handed over the leadership of the Sokoto State University (SSU) to Prof. Mohammaed Yerima, who was appointed to act as its Vice Chancellor.

ASHENEWS recalls that Garba, who was SSU vice Chancellor, was recently appointed as UDUS Vice Chancellor, to take over from Prof. Lawal Bilbis whose tenure expires at the end of August.

The handing over/taking over ceremony, which was held on Monday, August 26, 2024, at the Senate Chamber, marked a significant milestone in the history of the University.

In his taking-over speech, Prof. Yerima expressed his commitment to building on the achievements of his predecessor, promising to work diligently toward uplifting the status of the institution. He emphasized the importance of teamwork, open communication, and staff welfare.

Prof. Yerima also reiterated his commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the entire University community and adopting an open-door policy to encourage staff input.

He thanked the Visitor to the University, and Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, for finding him worthy of appointment and promised to justify the confidence reposed in him.

The outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Garba, thanked the entire members of the University community for their support and cooperation during his tenure, urging them to express the same to his successor.

He highlighted some of the achievements recorded, including the completion of several infrastructural projects and securing full NUC accreditation for 18 undergraduate programmes.

The Commissioner for Higher Education, represented by Abubakar Muhammad Gagi assured the University of the state government’s support and collaboration to improve tertiary education in Sokoto State.

Prof. Attahiru Ahmad Sifawa, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), offered goodwill messages to both Vice-Chancellors, wishing them success in their new roles. He expressed optimism that the duo have all the potential to carry out their new assignments.

The ceremony marked a new chapter in the history of Sokoto State University and Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, as they continue to strive for excellence in education and research.
