The media community in Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Arise News Channel journalist, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was killed during an armed robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.
The 29-year-old news anchor, reporter, and producer—fondly called Sommie by colleagues—was said to have died in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025. The incident is currently under investigation by the Nigeria Police Force.
In a statement issued on Monday, the management of Arise News described Maduagwu as more than just a colleague, noting that she was “a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers.”
“Beyond the airwaves, Sommie was a lawyer, a professional, and a supportive colleague and friend to many. Her voice is now silent but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory,” the statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi for the management read.
The management also extended heartfelt condolences to her parents, siblings, extended family, and friends, while urging law enforcement authorities to swiftly apprehend and prosecute those behind the killing.
Maduagwu, who combined her background in law with her passion for journalism, had built a reputation as a bright, articulate, and engaging broadcaster. Her sudden death has sparked shockwaves among colleagues, viewers, and the wider Nigerian journalism community.
“She was young, brilliant, and full of life. It’s a painful loss not just to Arise but to the profession,” one colleague who asked not to be named said.
Tributes have since begun pouring in on social media from friends, associates, and viewers who recall her warmth and professionalism.
As investigations continue, the media industry is united in grief, while calling for greater protection for journalists and residents across Nigeria.
