The Sokoto State Government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening social protection as a tool to fight poverty, unemployment, and vulnerability.
Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Abubakar Mohammad Zayyana, stated this at a one-day Consultative Stakeholders Workshop on Social Protection Capacity Needs Assessment organized in collaboration with UNICEF and the International Labour Organization (ILO).
Dr. Zayyana described social protection as vital for security, dignity, and economic stability, but raised concern over ILO research showing rising levels of inadequate coverage in Nigeria. He urged stronger synergy among stakeholders to close capacity gaps and improve interventions.
Chairperson of the State Social Protection Technical Working Group, Maryam Ahmad Barade, represented by the Director of Planning, Sani Abdullahi, said despite government and partner interventions, poverty indices remain high. She called for a lasting framework that will make social protection more effective.
ILO’s National SUSI Project Officer, Mr. Benedict Obute, disclosed that only 14.8% of Nigerians had access to at least one form of social protection as of 2014, warning that poverty will worsen unless coverage expands.
Goodwill messages from traditional leaders, government officials, and development partners praised the initiative as a step towards bridging gaps in data and policy for effective social protection in Sokoto State.
