The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, describing his death as “the end of an era.”
In a condolence message released by his media team, the Sultan paid glowing tribute to Buhari’s life of service, dedication to nation-building, and enduring belief in traditional institutions as a cornerstone for peace and unity in Nigeria.
“He was a great Nigerian leader, endowed with the qualities that commanded respect both before, during, and after his tenure as President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the Sultan stated.
Highlighting Buhari’s disciplined leadership style and legacy, the Sultan noted that his contributions to national development would not be forgotten. “His legacy of leadership, rooted in truth, patriotism, and national integrity, will resonate in the minds of not only our generation but those yet to come. History will continue to acknowledge his contributions.”
Recalling key moments in Buhari’s career, the Sultan praised his role as a military ruler in the 1980s when he launched the War Against Indiscipline (WAI) campaign, and his achievements as Federal Commissioner for Petroleum Resources, where he helped establish Nigeria’s major oil refineries.
“Former President Muhammadu Buhari will be remembered by all of us who knew him as a leader who came, saw, and conquered,” he added.
The Sultan also lauded Buhari’s patriotism and love for humanity throughout his life in public service.
Concluding his message with prayers, the Sultan said, “May Allah grant his soul the bliss of the grave and repose his soul in Al-Jannah Firdaus. Amiin.”
