Sokoto: NUJ Credentials Committee rolls out 2024 election timetable

The 2024 Credentials Committee for the election of new officials into the Sokoto State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has rolled out its timetable and criteria for eligibility of aspiring members of the Union.

A statement by the Secretary of the Committee, Abdallah el-Kurebe, the timetable of activities stems from Wednesday, November 13, 2024, culminating in the election, scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 21, 2024.

The timetable of the activities is broken down as follows:

1            Sales and Submission of nomination forms                        Wednesday, November 13 to 20, 2024

2            Screening of Candidates                                                          Thursday, November 21 to 23, 2024

3            Display of Screened Candidates                                            Tuesday, November 26 to 28, 2024

4            Submission/Hearing of Claims & Objections                       Friday, Nov. 29 to December 2, 2024

5            Display of Final List                                                                  Tuesday, December 3 to 6, 2024

6            Manifestoes Night                                                                   Monday, December 9

7            Election Day                                                                              Saturday, December 21, 2024

CRITERIA FOR ELIGIBILITY

According to the statement, aspiring members must meet the criteria stipulated in Articles 3 and 6 of the Constitution of the NUJ as follows:

1.           Candidates shall hold a minimum of First Degree or Higher National Diploma with cognate experience in Journalism, Mass Communication or Media Studies obtained from any recognized educational institution

2.           Candidates for the election shall be nominated and sponsored by two financial members of his Council or Chapel

3.           Candidates must have been in active service for seven years, be in good financial standing and must have been officers in a Chapel

4.           Candidates must have fully paid their check-off dues and practicing or professional fees

5.           Candidates and the sponsors must have attended at least 50% of meetings of the State Council and Chapel within the period between Conferences

Nomination fees:

The statement further said that candidates shall pay nomination fees as follows:

1.           Chairmanship                                                              N50,000

2.           Vice Chairman                                                            N30,000

3.           State Secretary                                                          N40,000

4.           State Assistant Secretary                                    N30,000

5.           State Treasurer                                                          N35,000

6.           State Financial Secretary                                     N25,000

7.           State Internal Auditor                                             N25,000

The statement called on members of the Union as well as candidates to cooperate with the Committee for a smooth conduct of the election.
