The Sokoto State Government has pledged to revive the State Bureau of Statistics to ensure the availability of accurate and comprehensive data for effective policymaking.

Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Abubakar Zayyana, made the commitment while opening a two-day orientation workshop for the bureau’s staff, organized by the ministry. He emphasized that no policy can succeed without reliable data and urged staff members to be proactive in fulfilling their responsibilities.

“Their role is crucial in collecting, compiling, analyzing, and disseminating data on the state’s socio-economic landscape. Teamwork and commitment are essential to changing the narrative,” Zayyana stated.

He also stressed the need for continuous updates of collected data to reflect current realities and aid decision-makers, planners, and researchers. To strengthen the bureau’s operations, the ministry has lined up capacity-building activities to enhance staff efficiency.

The overseer of the State Bureau of Statistics, Sani Abdullahi, highlighted the workshop’s goal of equipping participants with essential skills to improve statistical standards. He encouraged attendees to engage actively and seek clarifications during the training.

State Coordinator of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Sa’idu Saleh, expressed confidence that the training would enhance the bureau’s performance. He reiterated NBS’s commitment to collaborating with the Sokoto State Bureau of Statistics for improved data collection and analysis.

Representatives from civil society organizations and the Open Government Partnership (OGP) praised the initiative, commending the Commissioner’s dedication to revitalizing the bureau for efficient service delivery.
