The Sokoto State Government has approved the conduct of a Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) Survey to generate data-driven insights for tackling poverty and inequality across the state.
A statement by the Commissioner of Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Abubakar Mohammed Zayyana, on Saturday, said the MPI survey, scheduled to run from June 19 to July 9, 2025, will be carried out in partnership with Redwire Marketing Consulting, with minimal financial implications for the government.
He explained that the exercise will cover all parts of the state and assess key indicators such as education, healthcare, employment, standard of living, and access to basic services.
Governor Dr. Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, who endorsed the initiative, described it as a strategic component of his administration’s 9-Point Smart Agenda, which emphasizes security, economic growth, education, healthcare, and youth empowerment.
The survey, he said, will offer a clearer understanding of the root causes of deprivation at the household level, enabling the formulation of targeted and evidence-based policies.
The MPI survey will adhere to international standards in assessing poverty beyond income, exploring multiple dimensions of well-being to present a holistic view of socioeconomic challenges facing residents of Sokoto State.
Zayyana noted that the initiative is a major step in the ongoing reform of the State Bureau of Statistics. “We are committed to delivering timely and actionable data that can guide inclusive development and meaningful interventions,” he said.
Echoing this, the State Statistician General, Abdullahi Abdulrahman Shagari, emphasized that the Bureau has been repositioned to play a central role in policy planning through the generation of reliable statistics, including the forthcoming MPI survey.
The findings from the survey are expected to shape social programs and resource allocation, ultimately improving living standards and reducing inequalities in Sokoto state.
