It is indeed a curious, ridiculous, and unfortunate abuse of constitutionalism, rule of law, and decency for Igbo leaders to insist on the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu without trial. Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been on trial for treasonable felony since 2015 when he was arrested over his violent and unconstitutional secessionist push. Despite being granted bail in 2017, he fled the country and was rearrested in Kenya before being repatriated to Nigeria in 2021.

The recent announcement of plans for the South East Governors’ Forum to visit President Bola Tinubu to seek the release of Nnamdi Kanu is not only an affront to the judicial processes and Nigeria’s criminal justice system but also a slap in the face of all law-abiding citizens. Kanu has been responsible for making inciting and hateful statements that have led to several attacks and killings of security personnel and citizens from other parts of the country.

This decision by the South East governors raises concerns about a wider conspiracy to divide Nigeria through separatist agitations. The resurgence of groups like IPOB and their ilk poses a serious threat to the unity and stability of the country. It is evident that these groups are not just seeking autonomy but are actively working towards causing inter-regional crisis, possibly leading to civil war or general unrest that could ultimately result in the breakup of Nigeria.

The insistence on the release of Nnamdi Kanu without trial only serves to embolden these separatist groups and encourages them to continue their divisive and destructive activities. It sends a dangerous message that individuals who incite violence and threaten the peace and security of the nation can do so with impunity.

The demand for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu without trial is not only a blatant violation of constitutional principles and the rule of law but also poses a significant threat to the unity and stability of Nigeria.

The rule of law is a fundamental pillar of any democratic society. It ensures that all individuals are treated equally under the law and are entitled to a fair trial before being convicted of any crime. By demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu without trial, we are essentially undermining the very foundation of our legal system and setting a dangerous precedent for future cases.

Furthermore, the insistence on the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu sends a message that certain individuals are above the law and can act with impunity. This not only erodes public trust in the legal system but also creates a sense of injustice and inequality among the populace. It is essential that we hold all individuals accountable for their actions, regardless of their status or political affiliations.

Moreover, the release of Nnamdi Kanu without trial could have far-reaching consequences for the unity and stability of Nigeria. Kanu is a controversial figure who has been accused of inciting violence and promoting secessionist ideologies. Allowing him to walk free without facing the consequences of his actions could embolden other separatist groups and lead to further unrest and division within the country.

In conclusion, the demand for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu without trial is a dangerous and irresponsible stance that undermines the rule of law and threatens the unity and stability of Nigeria. It is essential that we uphold the principles of justice and due process in order to maintain the integrity of our legal system and ensure the continued peace and harmony of our nation.

Let us stand firm in our commitment to upholding the rule of law and reject any attempts to subvert it for political gain. The South East governors must reconsider their stance and prioritize the interests of the nation over the demands of a single individual. It is essential that justice be served and that those who seek to undermine the peace and security of the nation be held accountable for their actions.
