Politicians who are worth their salt and understand their roles are known to overcome challenges to improve the living conditions of their people. Globally, during campaign seasons, political parties and their candidates present blueprints they intend to execute while in office. Ahmed

Nigeria is no exception; however, many campaign promises are often taken with a pinch of salt, as the electorate has become more discerning. Past track records of performance, either in public or private endeavors, now serve as a crucial determinant for voters. This likely informed the widespread support garnered by Sokoto’s current governor, Ahmed Aliyu, in the 2023 general elections.
History is still replete with the achievements of the Magatakarda administration in Sokoto State. Aliyu, Magatakarda’s political protégé, and the incumbent governor, has built upon this legacy. During the 2023 campaigns, they toured the 23 local government areas of the state, canvassing for support. Against all odds and political intrigues, Ahmed Aliyu emerged victorious. Today, Sokoto is experiencing a new dawn, thanks to Aliyu’s efforts to address the neglect of physical infrastructure by the previous administration.
Human development is a critical aspect of political development. Improving people’s living conditions and enabling gainful employment is paramount in the blueprints of serious politicians. The present administration in Sokoto has convinced even the most skeptical that it is committed to elevating the state to greater heights.
Ahmed Aliyu’s decision to allocate ₦500 million monthly to clear the backlog of unpaid gratuities to retired civil servants, including deceased ones, is a well-thought-out move. This gesture has had positive effects on the economy of the beneficiaries and the state as a whole, with significant multiplier effects.
Agriculture remains the mainstay of Sokoto’s economy, especially in rural areas. This explains Aliyu’s intervention to support farmers. Assorted fertilizers, improved seeds, pesticides, and water pumping machines were distributed at no cost to farmers across the 23 local government areas. This epochal distribution, performed by Senator Aliyu Wamakko, marked the administration’s first 100 days in office. Another consignment of agricultural inputs was later distributed by Senator Adamu Alieru. Recently, the state government distributed more fertilizers, seeds, and farm inputs to farmers for the rainy and upcoming dry seasons.
In a similar effort, the administration distributed relief materials to those affected by the 2022/23 flood disaster. The materials included foodstuffs, building materials, clothing, and cash. This intervention will help victims resettle, as observed by Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje during the distribution exercise.
The womenfolk, a strategic societal stratum, are always included in the administration’s plans. Rice, maize, fertilizers, domestic animals (sheep, goats, poultry), and cash were distributed to various women’s groups and middle-class farmers across the state. The aim is to economically empower women, thereby uplifting households and the broader population.
The administration also organized a skills acquisition program for young men and women in tailoring and fashion designing, distributing 100 sewing machines and starter capital in an event graced by Imo’s governor, Hope Uzodinma. Aliyu is no stranger to youth empowerment, having championed similar programs as the commissioner of youth and social welfare under Senator Aliyu Wamakko.
Additionally, the administration distributed 1,000 grinding machines to women’s groups, motivating them towards gainful engagement and self-reliance. To generate jobs and livelihoods, 1,000 motorcycles and 500 tricycles were provided to youths at subsidized rates. These vehicles play a crucial role in public transport and income generation, especially given the high levels of unemployment or underemployment among the youth.
These interventions must be viewed holistically, considering their multiplier effects on the people and the economy. Ahmed Aliyu aims to make life more bearable by improving physical and economic infrastructure. His administration has rekindled hope for a better and greater Sokoto State. By God’s grace, we will continue to observe and share our views as more people-centered programs are rolled out by the people’s governor.
