The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) strongly condemns the brutal abduction and subsequent murder of the Emir of Gobir by bandits. This despicable act is not only a grave violation of the sanctity of traditional institutions but also a clear indication of the deep-rooted chaos afflicting parts of Northern Nigeria. The NEF expresses profound outrage, reflecting the collective grief of the northern populace, who revere their traditional leaders.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Director of Publicity and Advocacy of the Forum, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman on Saturday.

The assassination of the Emir of Gobir transcends the loss of a life; it is a severe attack on our cultural heritage, a blatant disregard for customary authority, and a stark reminder of the widespread insecurity that has plagued much of Northern Nigeria. This heinous act is not just a crime against an individual but an affront to the values that bind our society together. Traditional rulers in Northern Nigeria symbolize stability, guidance, and communal identity. Their abduction and murder send shockwaves through our communities, eroding the already fragile trust between the people and the institutions meant to protect them.

The NEF extends its heartfelt condolences to the Sultan of Sokoto, the family of the deceased Emir, and the people of Gobir, and calls for swift justice. The forum urges all relevant stakeholders, including government authorities and security agencies, to take decisive action to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators of this atrocity. Allowing such criminals to go unpunished would only embolden them, further exacerbating the cycle of violence and instability that has become all too common in our region.

These acts of banditry are not isolated incidents; they are part of a disturbing trend of violence and lawlessness that has instilled fear and insecurity in Northern Nigeria. The frequent kidnappings, robberies, and other atrocities have left our communities in despair. The murder of a prominent figure like the Emir of Gobir marks a troubling escalation in this violence, threatening to undermine the respect, dignity, and authority that traditional leaders embody.

This tragedy calls for a comprehensive reevaluation of the security architecture in Northern Nigeria. It is imperative for policymakers to address the root causes of insecurity, including economic disenfranchisement, rampant poverty, and inadequate governance. A reactive approach, primarily characterized by military interventions, is insufficient. A holistic strategy that includes community engagement, economic development, and education must be prioritized to empower local populations and build resilience against criminal influences.

The NEF’s call to action also serves as a reminder to civil society and community leaders of their critical roles in finding sustainable solutions to the ongoing violence. Increasing public awareness, fostering community solidarity, and collaborating with security forces can create an environment where citizens are not only defenders of their communities but also active participants in the fight against crime and lawlessness.

The abduction and murder of the Emir of Gobir is a tragic symbol of the crisis facing Northern Nigeria—a crisis that demands immediate and sustained attention from government authorities, security agencies, traditional institutions, and civil society. The perpetrators of this heinous crime must be brought to justice, and rigorous efforts must be made to restore peace and security in the region. The collective outrage shared by the NEF and the communities of Northern Nigeria is a powerful reminder of our shared values, urging all stakeholders to respond with urgency, resolve, and a commitment to upholding justice in the face of adversity.
