In a world increasingly defined by division and tribalism, the presence of a modern leader who transcends such boundaries is both refreshing and necessary. Vice President Kashim Shettima exemplifies this ideal, as demonstrated during his recent visit to Lagos to honor the memory of Mrs. Gbemisola Olowolafe, the late wife of Dr. Tunji Olowolafe, Chancellor of Ekiti State University and former Chairman of GZ Industries (GZI). The service of songs and night of tributes held in her honor was not merely a ceremonial gathering; it was a poignant reminder of the power of a life devoted to philanthropy, community service, and humanity at large.

By Abdul-Azeez Suleiman

Shettima’s remarks at the occasion were imbued with heartfelt sincerity, as he extolled the late Mrs. Olowolafe’s commitment to her community and her selfless contributions to the betterment of society. In an age where individualism often takes precedence over collective well-being, Mrs. Olowolafe stood out as a beacon of altruism. She dedicated her life not for personal gain but for the upliftment of others, embodying the essence of true leadership. Her legacy, as highlighted by Shettima, serves as a profound reminder that greatness is measured not by wealth or status, but by the impact one has on the lives of others.

The tributes that poured in following her passing are a testament to her character and the indelible mark she left on those around her. Friends, family, and community members shared stories that painted a picture of a woman who was not only a loving wife and mother but also a compassionate friend and a tireless advocate for the marginalized. She was a woman of substance, whose values and actions resonated deeply within her community. The Vice President’s acknowledgment of her life and contributions serves to inspire others to follow in her footsteps, fostering a culture of giving and community engagement.

In his remarks, Shettima also offered prayers for the Olowolafe family, urging them to find solace not only in the cherished memories of their beloved wife and mother but also in the knowledge that she fulfilled her purpose on earth with honor. The Vice President’s words were a reminder that death, while sorrowful, can also be a celebration of a life well-lived. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the dignity with which Mrs. Olowolafe ran her race, encouraging those in attendance to reflect on their own lives and the legacies they wish to leave behind.

As a detribalized leader, Shettima embodies a new vision for Nigeria—one that seeks to bridge divides and foster unity among its diverse peoples. His presence at the tribute for Mrs. Olowolafe, a woman who dedicated her life to the service of others, reflects a commitment to values that transcend ethnic and tribal affiliations. In a nation where tribalism often undermines collective progress, Shettima’s actions serve as a clarion call for unity and shared purpose.

Vice President Kashim Shettima’s attendance at the service of songs and night of tributes for Mrs. Gbemisola Olowolafe is a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have on the lives of many. Her life of philanthropy and service stands as an example for all, and Shettima’s tribute underscores the importance of honoring such legacies.

As Nigeria continues to navigate its complex socio-political landscape, leaders like Shettima, who embrace a detribalized approach, will be essential in fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility. Mrs. Olowolafe’s memory will undoubtedly continue to inspire generations to come, urging them to live not for themselves, but for the greater good of humanity.
