Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has accused the state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, of partisanship and sabotage after the police command abruptly withdrew from the 2025 Independence Day celebration in Kano.
The governor, in a statement by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, described the CP’s action as “unprofessional, unethical, and a betrayal of constitutional duty,” noting that the boycott occurred just hours before the parade at Sani Abacha Stadium.
“As the Chief Security Officer of Kano State, we cannot tolerate sabotage to the peace, security, and wellbeing of our citizens. It is disgraceful that a Commissioner of Police would descend so low into partisan politics by boycotting a national event that symbolizes unity, patriotism, and democracy,” Yusuf said.
He accused CP Bakori of aligning with political forces opposed to the will of Kano people, calling him a “political police officer” who has abandoned professionalism and undermined democracy.
The governor, backed by traditional and religious leaders, lawmakers, business groups, youth organizations, and labour unions present at the event, urged President Bola Tinubu to direct the Inspector-General of Police to replace Bakori with a neutral officer who would restore public trust in the command.
Governor Yusuf, however, commended other security agencies — including Customs, Immigration, Correctional Service, Fire Service, and DSS — for fully participating in the parade and reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to protect lives and property in Kano.
