The Coalition of Shiroro Associations (COSA) has appealed to the Niger State Government to urgently renovate Anguwan Makama Primary School in Makama village, a few kilometers from Kuta, headquarters of Shiroro Local Government Area.
Chairman of the association, Usman Ibrahim Kuta, in a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mustapha Ibrahim, on Friday, described the school as being in a deplorable condition.
According to him, the roofs of the classrooms have been destroyed, the walls are weak, and there is no furniture to support teaching and learning. He said pupils are left to study in unsafe and unconducive conditions, which has discouraged attendance and contributed to the rising number of out-of-school children in the community.
“As an association committed to the welfare and future of young people, we believe that no child should be deprived of quality education due to the decay of public infrastructure. The current state of Anguwan Makama Primary School is a clear example of the urgent need for government intervention in rural education,” the statement read.
COSA urged the state government to take immediate steps to renovate the school buildings, provide adequate furniture, and supply the necessary learning materials.
“These measures will not only restore hope to the children of Anguwan Makama but will also reaffirm the government’s commitment to reducing the educational gap between rural and urban communities,” the group added.
The association stressed that education is the backbone of development and called for equal opportunities for children in Shiroro as those in other parts of Niger State.
