Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has cleared ₦22 billion from the ₦48 billion backlog of unpaid gratuities and death benefits inherited from the previous administration. This is in a decisive move to ease the burden of pensioners and families of deceased civil servants.
The development follows the approval and release of a fourth tranche of payments amounting to ₦6 billion, bringing the total amount disbursed under the current administration to ₦22 billion. Earlier tranches included ₦5 billion in the first phase, and ₦6 billion each in the second and third rounds of payment.
The State Government, in a statement issued by the Director General of Media and Publicity, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, described the payments as part of Governor Yusuf’s broader commitment to restore dignity to senior citizens and uphold social justice.
“Governor Yusuf remains resolute in his pledge to pay every kobo owed to our retirees and the families of our late civil servants,” the statement said, noting that the payments are a step toward repositioning Kano as a model for responsible governance.
The intervention has brought long-awaited relief to hundreds of retired workers and bereaved families who had endured years of delay in receiving their entitlements. Many have welcomed the gesture as a sign of renewed trust in public service and leadership.
Governor Yusuf also assured that the outstanding ₦26 billion balance would be cleared in due course through additional tranches, affirming that no affected beneficiary would be left behind.
“This is a demonstration of people-centered governance and a reaffirmation of our social contract with the citizens of Kano State,” the statement concluded.
