The Federal Government and environmental stakeholders have taken steps to validate the National Environmental (Permitting and Licensing Systems) Regulations, 2009, to strengthen environmental laws in the country.

Dr. Innocent Barikor, Director-General of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), speaking at a validation workshop on Monday in Abuja, said the document would improve air quality and prevent exposure to waste and hazardous substances.

He stated that the regulations aim to provide a framework for regulating activities that adversely impact Nigeria’s environment.

Barikor emphasized that the event marked a significant step in stakeholders’ collective journey towards a more sustainable and environmentally responsible Nigeria.

“The review of the National Environmental (Permitting and Licensing Systems) Regulations, 2009, has been a cornerstone in our efforts, providing a framework for regulating activities that adversely impact our environment.

“As we approach the final stages of this review process, your insights and contributions have been invaluable.

“This workshop serves as the critical platform for validating the revised regulations before submitting them to the Ministry of Justice for gazetting,” he said.

Barikor highlighted the crucial collaboration of diverse stakeholders, including the regulated sector and other players whose businesses have a bearing on the environment.

“Your expertise and feedback have helped refine and enhance these revised regulations, ensuring they are both effective and practical. We are at a pivotal moment. The outcome of this workshop will shape the regulatory landscape and, by extension, our nation’s environmental future,” he added.

In a goodwill message, Mr. Olufemitan Michael, a representative of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) Liaison Office, said the validation workshop for the review of the regulations was timely and apt.

“There is no better time to have this event than now, when the world is facing serious environmental challenges,” he said.

He congratulated NESREA on their efforts to ensure a cleaner, healthier, and safer environment for all Nigerians.

Michael assured MAN’s compliance and readiness to partner with NESREA to ensure a sustainable environment for generations to come.
