The Kano State Government has lauded the recent Court of Appeal judgment affirming its reforms in traditional institutions and overturning prior Federal High Court rulings concerning the Kano Emirate Council.

In a press conference held at the NUJ Press Centre, Kano, on Saturday, January 11, 2025, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Haruna Isa Dederi, alongside the Commissioners for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Information, and 44 Local Government Chairmen, addressed the media. The government reiterated its commitment to justice, equity, and the modernization of traditional institutions while safeguarding the state’s rich cultural heritage.

The appellate court’s decision validated the Kano State Government’s actions on chieftaincy appointments and reforms, emphasizing their alignment with constitutional provisions and applicable laws.

“For the avoidance of doubt, all decisions, pronouncements, and orders made by the Federal High Court in Kano have been quashed and set aside by the Court of Appeal,” said Barr. Dederi.

He further clarified that the law enacted by the Kano State House of Assembly concerning Emirates, along with all actions taken by the Executive Governor under that law, had been fully upheld and legalized by the Court of Appeal.

The judgment also reaffirmed the rightful jurisdiction over chieftaincy matters, ruling that the Federal High Court lacked the authority to interfere in such issues.

The state government described the ruling as a significant step toward ensuring equitable representation, inclusive governance, and stronger traditional institutions for the benefit of Kano residents.

“We extend our gratitude to the Judiciary for upholding the principles of justice and fairness,” the government stated. “The Kano State Government remains committed to working in harmony with traditional institutions to foster development and unity across all emirates.”

The government called on all public and private entities, as well as individuals, to respect and comply with the Court of Appeal’s decision to ensure its full implementation.

It urged all parties to set aside differences and collaborate in advancing peace and progress in Kano State. The administration reaffirmed its dedication to prioritizing the collective well-being of the state over individual interests.

The press conference concluded with an appeal for support and cooperation from Kano residents to build a united and prosperous future.
