The Kebbi State Elders Consultative Forum, under the leadership of Major General Mohammed Magoro (Rtd), has expressed strong concern over the recent trend of unhealthy political statements, incitement, and the glorification of verbal attacks on political figures. The forum described these developments as detrimental to the peace, stability, and socio-economic progress of Kebbi State.
In a statement issued by the Forum’s Public Relations Officer, Garba Hamisu Zuru (Dan Amanan Zuru), and signed by the Vice Chairman, Hon. Justice Mohammed Sulaiman Ambursa (Rtd), the Forum lamented the rise in inflammatory rhetoric, warning that such actions threaten the longstanding peace and harmony among the people of the state.
The Forum called on political leaders to take responsibility by cautioning their supporters and admirers against making inciting remarks or engaging in praise-singing that promotes hostility or targets individuals. It warned that such behavior, if unchecked, could lead to a breakdown of law and order.
In addition, the Forum urged all politicians and their supporters to strictly adhere to the provisions of the Electoral Act, as well as the guidelines and regulations of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding political campaigns and activities. It emphasized that compliance with these rules is vital for ensuring peaceful and orderly political engagement in the state.
Justice Ambursa also appealed to all relevant security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), to ensure the full enforcement of electoral laws and INEC regulations. He stressed the importance of identifying and prosecuting violators to serve as a deterrent to others.
The Forum further appealed to the general public, including social media users and the traditional press, to refrain from spreading or amplifying inciting remarks or celebratory attacks on political figures. It emphasized that promoting peace and unity remains a collective responsibility for all stakeholders in Kebbi State.
