Al-Muhibbah Open University has announced the appointment of renowned academic, Prof. Yahuza Bello, former Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, as its new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council.

The announcement was contained in a statement signed by the Registrar, Barr. Muslim Maigari, and made available to journalists on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the appointment was formalized during a joint sitting of the university’s Board of Trustees and Governing Council, held on Sunday at the Council Chamber in Abuja, where members also reviewed the institution’s progress two years into its operations.

Chancellor of the university and Bauchi State First Lady, Dr. Aisha Bala Mohammed, commended the management for completing two uninterrupted academic sessions, describing it as a remarkable milestone for the young institution.

She urged Nigerians to take advantage of the university’s open and distance learning programmes to acquire employable skills and compete effectively in today’s job market. Dr. Aisha also stressed the need for collective efforts to tackle poverty, youth unemployment, and gender inequality. She further called on the government to strengthen policies that promote private sector participation and support girl-child education.

In his acceptance speech, Prof. Bello expressed appreciation for the appointment and pledged to work closely with the university’s management to achieve its strategic agenda for growth. He encouraged young people and marginalized communities to embrace digital learning as a tool for transforming education and expanding access nationwide.

The new Pro-Chancellor also declared the 2025/2026 admission process open, assuring prospective students of the institution’s commitment to quality, innovation, and integrity. He further appealed to the Federal Government to engage in genuine dialogue to resolve recurring labour and industrial crises in the education sector, especially at the tertiary level.

The meeting was attended by Prof. Garba Aliyu Babaji, Surv. Ibrahim Saidu Jahun, Prof. Ibrahim Magari, and Engr. Shamsudeen Bala Mohammed.
