The Mangu killings in Plateau State, Nigeria have once again highlighted the urgent need for a robust and impartial approach to justice for victims of violent incidents. In a nation grappling with the repercussions of ethnic and communal conflicts, the Mangu incident serves as a reminder of the fragility of peace and the pressing need for accountability. To ensure justice for the victims and prevent a recurrence of such tragedies, Kaduna State must advocate for a tripartite monitoring committee involving the Federal Government, Kaduna State, and Plateau State. This committee should oversee all aspects of the incident, from investigation and prosecution to compensation for the victims. Any arrangement that allows Plateau State to act as the sole arbiter in this matter is fraught with risks, as evidenced by the ongoing impunity surrounding the murder of General Alkali, whose killers continue to evade justice due to a conspiracy involving the Plateau State government and judiciary.

By Abdul-Azeez Suleiman

The complexity of the Mangu killings necessitates a multi-faceted response that transcends state boundaries. The involvement of the Federal Government, alongside Kaduna and Plateau States, ensures a balanced perspective that takes into account the interests and concerns of all parties affected by the incident. A tripartite monitoring committee would provide a platform for transparency and accountability, thereby fostering trust among the communities involved.

First and foremost, the investigation into the Mangu killings must be thorough and impartial. A committee comprising representatives from the three entities can help ensure that the investigation is conducted without bias and that all evidence is examined rigorously. This collaborative approach can mitigate the risks of favoritism and ensure that the truth is uncovered, which is essential for healing and reconciliation in the affected communities.

The prosecution of those responsible for the Mangu killings is another critical aspect that requires careful oversight. A tripartite committee can help ensure that the judicial process is fair and just, preventing any undue influence from local political dynamics. The recent history of the General Alkali case serves as a cautionary tale; the apparent complicity of the Plateau State government and judiciary in allowing his murderers to roam free underscores the dangers of a singular state managing such sensitive matters. By involving the Federal Government and Kaduna State, the tripartite committee can act as a check against potential abuses of power or corruption within the local judicial system.

Compensation for the victims and their families is a fundamental aspect of achieving justice. The Mangu killings have not only resulted in loss of life but have also devastated families and communities. A tripartite committee can facilitate a fair and equitable compensation process, ensuring that victims receive the support they need to rebuild their lives. This process should be transparent and inclusive, allowing for input from the affected communities to ensure that compensation is adequate and addresses the specific needs of the victims.

Establishing a tripartite monitoring committee is not merely a response to the Mangu killings; it is a proactive measure aimed at preventing future violence. By demonstrating a commitment to justice and accountability, the committee can help restore faith in the institutions meant to protect citizens. It can also serve as a model for how to address similar incidents in the future, fostering a culture of accountability and respect for human rights across Nigeria.

The Mangu killings represent a critical juncture for Kaduna and Plateau States, as well as the Federal Government. To ensure justice for the victims and prevent a recurrence of such tragedies, a tripartite monitoring committee is essential. This collaborative approach will promote transparency, accountability, and fairness in the investigation, prosecution, and compensation processes. The lessons learned from the General Alkali case must not be ignored; allowing Plateau State to act as the sole player in this incident risks perpetuating a cycle of impunity that has plagued Nigeria for too long. By advocating for this tripartite arrangement, Kaduna State can take a significant step toward ensuring justice for the victims and fostering a more peaceful and just society for all. It is imperative that this message reaches the necessary quarters for the required actions to be taken.
