Senegal’s Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, has pledged unwavering support for Burkina Faso in its fight against terrorism, underscoring the urgent need for regional cooperation in addressing insecurity across the Sahel.
Sonko made the declaration during a two-day official visit to Ouagadougou, where he met with Burkinabe President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré. The visit focused on regional security and the imperative of collective action to combat terrorism and violent extremism.
“I have come to convey a message of absolute support to President Ibrahim Traoré, his government, and all the people of Burkina Faso in their fight against terrorism,” Sonko said. “Senegal is ready for all forms of collaboration and assistance necessary to help address this growing threat.”
The Senegalese Prime Minister also warned that terrorism in the Sahel is a regional threat that requires a unified response, cautioning against any illusion that the violence will remain confined to a few countries.
“It is illusory to believe that the security threat will stop at the borders of Burkina Faso, Mali, or Niger. This is a struggle across West Africa. No country in the sub-region will be spared from this gangrene if it continues to spread,” he added.
Sonko’s statements reflect a deepening consensus among West African leaders that terrorism poses a threat to the entire region. His visit comes at a time when countries in the Sahel are grappling with persistent attacks from insurgent groups, leading to widespread displacement and humanitarian crises.
