I decided to write this piece on Senator Ibrahim Lamido, the senator representing Sokoto East, after reading a series of articles related to him. These unfortunate articles have clearly been crafted to create discord within the state chapter of the APC and undermine the good works of Governor Ahmed Aliyu.

The claims of a rift within the party and alleged mass resignations of some traditional leaders from Sabon Birni Local Government, supposedly aligning with him, seem aimed at ridiculing the APC-led state government. Sadly, the Distinguished Senator has not refuted any of these claims, suggesting his alignment with them.

First and foremost, I wish to state that I’m a card-carrying member of the APC who diligently strives to strengthen the party in any way possible. It is, therefore, fitting for me to express my views on issues affecting our party.

As a new politician, Senator Lamido achieved tremendous success in the 2023 general elections, culminating in his victory as a senator representing Sokoto East. However, these articles risk damaging his political career, as truth always prevails over falsehood. Many prominent politicians in the party believe he is being influenced by Abuja-based politicians in collaboration with the opposition PDP to destabilize the APC in the state.

His two allies, Hon. Bello Isah Ambarura and Hon. Sani Yakubu, have also shown ungratefulness to the party and their political mentor, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko. Hon. Ambarura’s limited political base prevented him from winning the local government chairmanship election back in 1999, and even in 2023, he only succeeded with Senator Wamakko’s support. The same applies to Hon. Yakubu. Many recognize Senator Wamakko as a compassionate and accommodating politician, a leader of great repute both within and outside the state. Numerous politicians owe him debts of gratitude that are not easily repaid, as he has held the party together with his remarkable leadership and generosity.

This piece, therefore, serves as a cautionary reminder of the responsibility entrusted to Senator Lamido as a representative of the people. While political differences are a natural part of democracy, inciting intra-party conflicts undermines our shared goals and interests.

Unfortunately, his recent actions seem intended to foster division within the party, jeopardizing the state’s ability to effectively address critical issues. He has failed to recognize the remarkable work of the APC-led administration under Governor Ahmed Aliyu, who has rekindled the people’s hopes and aspirations in democracy.

The Distinguished Senator should reconsider his approach to party matters and prioritize unity and progress. Constructive dialogue and collaboration are essential to achieving positive change and stability in party politics. The Senator should engage in respectful discourse, prioritize common ground, and work towards solutions that strengthen the party, if indeed there is any rift.

Mohammed is a member of the Sokoto Liberal Democrats Media Foundation (SOLID).
